Overview

The Assistant Unit Director supports the daily operations of the Club, ensuring a safe, fun, and engaging environment for all members. This position assists in supervising staff, managing programs, overseeing facilities, and maintaining strong relationships with families, schools, and the community. The Assistant Unit Director serves as second-in-command to the Unit Director and provides leadership in their absence.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing high-quality youth development programs aligned with BGCL’s mission and priorities.
  • Provide direct supervision and coaching to program staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Support the recruitment, training, and evaluation of staff and volunteers.
  • Serve as acting Unit Director in the absence of the Director.

Program & Impact Delivery

  • Ensure programs support priority outcomes in Academic Success, Character & Leadership, Healthy Lifestyles, and Life & Workforce Readiness.
  • Oversee daily program schedules, attendance, and member engagement.
  • Support program quality monitoring and evaluation using tools such as NYOI and Impact Hours.
  • Promote positive member behavior and implement discipline policies fairly and consistently.

Operations & Facilities

  • Assist with maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming Club environment.
  • Support facility use planning, equipment upkeep, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Enforce safety procedures in alignment with BGCA and BGCL standards.

Community & Family Engagement

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with families, schools, and community partners.
  • Support recruitment, orientation, and retention of Club members.
  • Assist with special events, fundraising initiatives, and community outreach activities.

Administration & Compliance

  • Assist with budgeting, grant compliance, and program reporting as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate member records, incident reports, and program data.
  • Ensure adherence to BGCL policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in youth development, education, or nonprofit program management.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage diverse groups of people.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and program management software; experience with BGCA membership systems a plus.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
