Overview

TITLE: Director of Development

 

OVERVIEW: 

Develops strategic plan and directs activities to maintain and grow individual, corporate, and special event fund development; and marketing and communications. This includes, but is not limited to, oversight and direct participation for donor cycle management, proposal development, event planning, marketing activities, social media, public relations, donor database management, and department reporting. This position involves both internal and external responsibilities and works in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 

 

REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer

 

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, salaried exempt  

 

SALARY: $70,000-$90,000, commensurate with experience

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Member of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Supervise development, special events, and marketing staff.
  • Work in conjunction with the Grants Department. 
  • Maintain oral and written contact with the CEO, Board of Directors, staff peers, and volunteers for the purpose of exchange of information and to coordinate activities. 

Strategic Planning

  • Analyze data to inform strategic plan development.
  • Create goals and strategies surrounding resource development, ultimately creating a process for implementing activities relating to all fundraising initiatives, marketing, and communications.
  • Proposal development.
  • Develop dashboards to reflect progress towards goals.

Resource Management

  • Control fundraising expenses related to major gift solicitations within budget. 
  • Manage record keeping for major gift donors, ensuring effective administrative and operational support functions are in place. 
  • Train Club staff, executives, board members and volunteers in solicitation techniques and involve them in major gift activities. 

Partnership Development

  • Develop strategic alliances with community leaders, donors and prospects. 
  • Create relationships with existing regional and national Boys & Girls Club of America sponsors.
  • Maintain oral and written contact with other donors, prospects, and others for the purpose of exchanging information and ideas and for the purpose of fundraising. Establish stewardship correspondence that includes timely delivery of tax-donation receipts and corresponding thank you letters. 

Donor Management and Stewardship

  • Direct and participate in donor cycle management - prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Conduct face-to-face solicitations involving the CEO and key stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing plans and programs resulting in increased awareness of impact and a positive image within and beyond the Lawrence Community including but not limited to:
    • Website content management;
    • Social media management;
    • Assisting with the drafting and distribution of the BGCLK Annual Report;
    • Drafting and distributing direct mail fundraising letter(s);
    • Drafting and distributing stakeholder/donor Information Packets;
    • Other marketing pieces as required for events and special promotions.
  • Ensure appropriate and timely communication and follow-up with key supporters.
  • Maintain the donor database.
  • Manage stewardship procedures.
  • End of Year/Annual Campaign development and implementation.

Special Events

  • Plan and execute annual events.
  • Manage Parent Giving fundraising program support.
  • Community event coordination.

Internal Communications 

  • Manage internal communications strategy ensuring alignment of vision, mission, and goals.
  • Weekly all-staff email related to current initiatives and events.
  • Monthly stakeholder newsletter.

Qualifications

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • College degree in a related field(s).
  • 5+ years in a dedicated fundraising position with a proven track record of success.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role.
  • 3+ years major donor development experience.
  • Marketing and communications experience.
  • Strategic planning experience.
  • Budgeting experience. 
  • Policy and procedure development experience. 
  • Donor database experience. 
  • Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets, and estates. 
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with all levels of stakeholders.
