Overview

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT - $50,000 - $65,000 annual salary

The Director of Development works with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and board to plan and execute resource development strategies and monitor progress toward goals. Supports the CEO in positioning the board to cultivate and solicit major gifts and grants from individuals, corporations, foundations, United Way, government agencies and others, and is responsible for providing leadership and direction to staff in support of resource development and marketing.

Responsibilities

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Leadership

  1. Provide leadership and direction to the Executive Director and Board of Directors in the effective operation of all development activities required to fund Club operations and deliver programs within the community recognizing each donor accordingly and appropriately based on their preference.

Strategic Planning

  1. In collaboration with Executive Director and Board, develop and implement a strategic plan for single and multi-year resource development efforts.
  2. Research and analyze agency, corporate, individual and foundation donor base and recommended solicitation strategies.
  3. Prepare and present for approval proposals for corporate and foundation support of the Club.
  4. Oversee planning of logistics for special events.
  5. Design and implement direct mail programs utilizing multi social media resources.
  6. Provide support for various fund raising projects/initiatives assigned by Executive Director, such as endowments, major gifts and planned giving.
  7. Ensure the evaluation of development activities and identify opportunities to improve results.
  8. Collaborate with the Executive Director and Resource Development Committee to develop annual income and expense budget.

Board Development

  1. Identify, recruit and train board members to participate in solicitation, stewardship, and other income development activities.
  2. Identify, recruit and train board members to share the mission and impact of the Club has in changing lives and generations.
  3. Encourage and support board committees responsible for planning and implementing development activities.

Resource Management

  1. Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of the Club’s annual budget, controlling expenditures within budget and maintaining donor and financial records in accordance with standards.
  2. Ensure productive and effective performance by all development staff.
  3. Recruit, select, manage and provide career development opportunities for staff and volunteers working to support resource development efforts for the Club.

Resource Development

  1. Seek and secure financial support and resources by managing:
    1. The preparation of the annual request for United Way funds;
    2. Implementation of annual stewardship plans for current supporters;
    3. Identification of potential funders on a routine basis and implementation of a cultivation plan for each new funder;
    4. Research and application preparedness and submission for any new or renewing grant opportunity.

Partnership Development

  1. Develop strategic alliances with community leaders, local officials and businesses.
  2. Develop collaborative partnerships with other youth serving organizations, members, parents, families, funders and community organizations.

Marketing and Public Relations

  1. In coordination with the Communications Director:
  2. Increase visibility of Club activities and maintain good public relations.
  3. Promote Club events strategically to target populations.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure design and development of public relations documents for use in the promotion of fund raising and education of the public, including press releases.
  2. Ensure the development and distribution of marketing documents in accordance with Boys & Girls Clubs of America standards and Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri branding.
  3. Attend meetings of Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and Program Committee in an advisory role, as requested.

Qualifications

  • KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
    The ideal candidate will be a process and detail oriented leader with proven, results-focused project management experience. Qualified candidates will have the following: 
    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or management (required), Master’s Degree preferred or/and equivalent combination of experience.
    • A minimum of 3 years experience in non-profit resource development capacity, with at least two years in a leadership capacity; and/or equivalent combination of experience

    In addition, qualified candidates will demonstrate:
    • Knowledgeable about foundations and corporate funding processes
    • Established leadership skills: developing commitment, facilitating, team building, establishing
     
    and maintaining effective working relationships with Board of Directors, community groups,
     
    Club staff, volunteers and other related agencies.
    • Proven effectiveness in motivating and leading diverse groups to accomplish common
     goals.
    • Ability to organize, direct and coordinate operations; in personnel supervision, the
     
    recruitment, motivation and retention of key personnel.

    • Uncompromising integrity and high level of professional maturity, judgment and emotional
      intelligence.
      • Written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills, including presentation skills.
      • Ability to work effectively with others and relate well with others including

      supervisors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the organization.
    • Responsible decision making skills.
