JOB SUMMARY

 

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama’s visibility, impact, and financial resources with a keen eye to strategic planning and implementation. The Director of Development will also design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.


The Director of Development will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow to a $1.5M budget through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. They also will act as a key participant in the development and execution of statewide strategies in partnership with other Boys & Girls Clubs development professionals, and key Boys & Girls Clubs of America staff.


They will expand and diversify Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama’s donor base and pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the Director of Development will in partnership with the CEO, support and cultivate an active board-level Resource Development committee, responsible for key strategy implementation and major gift solicitation.


The ideal candidate will have a strategic growth mindset, experience supporting growing organizations, success in creating and growing a major gift portfolio, proven ability to manage multiple lines of business and direct reports, a keen eye for detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

• Work with the Chief Executive Officer to plan the annual budget and implement resource development strategies to meet and exceed budget goals.
• Lead the development and implementation of an annual resource development plan in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and key Board members.
• Develop strategic partnerships with local and national corporations, businesses, and institutions, including managing key media relationships.

• Establish and maintain appropriate communications between Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff members.
• Provide leadership to the Board of Directors, Resource Development committee.
• Regularly prepare financial reports, including projected timelines for incremental receipt of revenues.
• Create all campaign strategies, including the generation of appeal letters, corporate and major gift proposals, thank you letters, and agency information correspondence to donors and supporters.
• Prepare public relations and marketing materials for the public and the media.
• Supervise the hiring and management of the Grants Manager, Resource Development Coordinator, and marketing interns.
• Direct identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts from major individual, corporate, and foundation prospects.
• In partnership with the Resource Development Committee, plan, coordinate, and supervise all fundraising events.
• Maintain accurate donor and solicitation data, including the archiving of all solicitations & proposals.
• Develop and supervise donor recognition strategies and events.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

RELATIONSHIPS


Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club
Members. Maintain contact with Board of Directors, Advisory Board members and specifically volunteers associated with fundraising events.


External: Maintain potential and current donors, corporate and businesses partners, public relations and marketing professionals and community groups.

Qualifications

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

 

• 6-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization preferred; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources). Transferable and/or related experience is acceptable.
• Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
• Ability to work independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama.
• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
• High energy and passion for Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama mission.
• Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan.
• Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Customer focus.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to perform certain duties. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to moderate in office settings to moderate and usually loud in recreation and play settings when children are present.
All employees working directly with children at all Boys and Girls Club of East Alabama locations are required to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions.
